Advancing fan technology with Torin

Torin, a leading UK manufacturer of fans, motors, and motorised impellers for air conditioning systems, partnered with the University of Exeter through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) to advance its product design capabilities. Together, they developed computational modelling tools to design quieter, more energy-efficient fans, giving Torin a competitive edge in a demanding market.

The partnership responded to a growing challenge in the air conditioning sector: creating fans that reduce noise pollution without sacrificing efficiency. Improving fan performance required moving beyond traditional design methods toward advanced simulation and optimisation techniques. By joining forces with academic experts, Torin aimed to build in-house capabilities for advanced product development.

This shift has already resulted in improved product efficiency of 5%, with the newly optimised fan designs reducing power consumption and supporting Torin’s sustainability credentials.

Over three years, the KTP brought together Torin’s technical team and expertise from KTP Associate Hamid Motamedi Zokae under the supervision of Professors Gavin Tabor and Dave Moxey.

Hamid led the development of bespoke Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models tailored to Torin’s existing products and applications. These models were tested and refined using real data, which helped ensure they accurately represented how the fans would work in the real world. Optimisation algorithms were then applied to create designs that met customer-specific needs for noise reduction and efficiency, helping Torin offer more flexible, bespoke solutions.

This capability to deliver high-performance, low-noise products has significantly enhanced Torin’s market competitiveness. At the same time, more accurate simulations have reduced reliance on physical prototypes, leading to notable cost reductions and shorter development lead times.

Hamid explained, “This tool now allows Torin to create tailor-made products based on specific applications and customer requirements. These quieter, more efficient fans strengthen Torin’s position in the HVAC market.”

The impact extends beyond the company itself. Quieter air conditioning systems can help contribute to more comfortable environments in homes, offices, and hospitals, helping reduce noise pollution – a growing public health concern. Improved efficiency also supports broader goals to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions in the built environment.

The success of the project is forecast to generate an additional £1.8 million in new business, further underlining the commercial value delivered through the KTP.

Since completing the project, Torin has taken Hamid on permanently as a CFD Engineer. Reflecting, Hamid said: “The KTP allowed me to attend training courses and international conferences, as well as develop a better understanding of the industry and the market. This exposure has been invaluable in shaping my career.”

By helping translate academic knowledge into commercial impact, the KTP reinforced Exeter’s role as a driver of innovation and industry collaboration.
