DIGITLab Wins Double at AI Impact Awards

DIGITLab, an EPSRC Next Stage Digital Economy Centre led by Prof Saeema Ahmed-Kristensen, has won two awards at the Digital Leaders AI Impact Awards for its innovative data and AI stakeholder programme. The project received the AI for Enterprise, Industry, Manufacturing & Supply Chain Award, judged by 23 industry leaders, and the People’s Choice Award, voted for by the public across all 36 finalists.

AI for Enterprise, Industry, Manufacturing & Supply Chain Award

DIGITLab’s Data and AI Stakeholder Programme was recognised for its innovation and as an exemplar of effective collaboration and responsible AI driving meaningful industry transformation. The programme addresses a key challenge: not only developing data and AI technologies, but ensuring they meet the needs of stakeholders in real-world contexts. It brings together big data, AI, and stakeholder insight to drive innovation and deliver practical outcomes.

The work was delivered in collaboration with See.Sense, whose smart bike lights collect sensor and GPS data, alongside representatives from Dublin’s councils, including Dun Laoghaire Rathdown, MOBY Bikes, and digital innovation teams. The programme was funded by DIGITLab and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology through the Spinovate project.

Key challenges explored included encouraging young people to take up cycling, ensuring cycling infrastructure is effectively maintained, and designing and optimising cycle networks for safety and usability. The programme demonstrated how sensor data and AI can support behaviour change, inform infrastructure management, and inspire new products and services. Insights from the project contributed to the development of data dashboards, which have been adopted by councils across the UK and Australia.

People’s Choice Award

The programme also received the People’s Choice Award, securing more than 6,000 votes from the Digital Leaders community and being recognised as a standout example of innovation with data and AI.
